Hello Linux/DevOps/SRE enthusiast or professional,
This is the SadServers newsletter, coming out every two months or so.
New Scenarios
-
Linux Server Review this is a Guided Learning scenario that shows how to quickly review a Linux server so you can characterize it (what is the server doing), find out how busy its hardware resources are, and if it has OS or application errors. Here's the accompanying guide. Good practice for practical troubleshooting interviews.
- "Bengaluru": Kubernetes StatefulSet least known characteristic - You can win bets against people who work with Kubernetes with this scenario; I created it because people kept arguing with me :-) When a worker node in k8s with pods goes down, you'd think the pods are rescheduled to other nodes right? so this is true for Deployments for example, but not for StatefulSets (do you know why?). This scenario shows this situation and what to do.
- "Yokohama": Linux Users Working Together This is an Easy challenge to review Linux permissions and a common case in some environments like schools or universities where users share the same Linux server.
- "Tokamachi": Troubleshooting a Named Pipe . This is an Easy to Medium challenge involving Linux named pipes, which are not that common (I think?) but a good chance to learn about them.
What kind of scenarios would you like to see next? let us know.
New or Improved Features
- Dark mode, as requested.
- Running scenarios have now a timer showing the time left before the VM is shut down.
- You can subscribe or unsubscribe to this newsletter from the dashboard (don't get any ideas heh).
- New Certificate of Achievements page. SadServers wants to help people get jobs and showing off practical achievements is a way to do that. So now Pro users can share the URL of their Achievements Page (in their resumes or LinkedIn for example) and they can also download their Linux and DevOps Troubleshooting Certificate as a PDF. This is what the page and certificate looks like. We are working on adding badges of completion for all users to share as well.
- For companies using SadServers invites to interview candidates with zero friction (Pro feature), besides being able to see the command line history of what the candidates did in a scenario, now also this shell history can be downloaded as a CSV file. We are working on a more complete feature set so hiring managers and recruiters can use SadServers to manage scenarios, interviews and candidates. For example, there are scenarios that are exclusive to companies, so solutions cannot be found on the Internet.
If you or someone you know wants to make money creating SadServers scenarios, please let us know!
Happy learning and happy troubleshooting!
Fernando Duran
